HCF Africa - Donate to Save Orphans In Kawempe

Am Ochieng Kennedy Orphaned at a young age, I co-founded HOPE Children's Foundation Africa( HCFA) as the Vice-chairman. In my life i have faced many things which i come across and it makes me feel sad whenever i see the conditions facing people in my area.

About my Area:

Kawempe is an urban slum populated by 300,000 people, most of whom live on under $1 a day. The slum is situated on a swamp, it is overcrowded, and formal employment is limited; many of the residents have settled here after fleeing the conflicts in the north of Uganda.

As a result of these poor conditions, many are driven to work in the sex trade to earn an income and few children can afford to attend school. These factors result in a higher than average prevalence of HIV infection in Kawempe Division2. In 2007, it was found that 45% of the people tested for HIV at two local health centres tested positive3 and in 2008, it was estimated that HIV prevalence among young women was 24%4. These rates are staggeringly higher than the national prevalence rates estimated by the UN in 2007 of 5.4% (for adults aged 15-49) and 3.9% (for women ages 15-24)5 and are directly attributable to a lack of education and HIV awareness.

Misinformation regarding HIV and AIDS abounds in this area. Rumours and superstition still account for much of what is ‘known’; for example, a 2008 study demonstrated that Antiretrovirals were presumed to be a cure, and that many young people are therefore no longer concerned about the threat of HIV or AIDS.

As HIV continues to spread throughout our community, we see more and more children left orphaned and vulnerable. With no one to provide for them, they are unable to educate and better themselves, and the cycle continues.

About my charity:

HOPE Children's Foundation Africa (HCFA) is a registered Ugandan charity dedicated to improving the lives of the orphans and vulnerable children in Kawempe. We provide HIV/AIDS education, prevention and positive living programs, offer educational support to the children and support the income generating activities of Women in the community.

HCFA is determined that all children should have the right to an education so that they may be empowered to create a successful life for themselves.

We assist the children by providing scholastic material, such as pens, notebooks, etc., and by offering a feeding program that supplies a daily, nutritious meal to each child.
